New York City is stepping up its long-term effort to modernize waste collection and reduce street litter with expanded availability of the official NYC trash bins, the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) announced today. The bins — now offered in all sizes and colors — are available citywide at The Home Depot and through popular delivery services, giving residents more options to prepare ahead of the compliance deadline this summer.

Under the city’s phased containerization program, residential buildings with one to nine units must start using the official NYC Bin for trash collection by June 2026. The initiative is part of a broader plan to clear black trash bags off sidewalks, reclaim public space and improve quality of life for New Yorkers.

All nine sizes for official NYC trash bins are now stocked at Home Depot locations throughout the five boroughs. Residents and property owners can pick them up in person or order home delivery through Instacart, DoorDash or Uber Eats.

The official bins come in capacities ranging from 13 to 45 gallons for trash, recycling and compost. While only the trash bin is required under the current rule, matching containers for recycling and compost are also available for those who want a full set.

A number of Home Depot stores stock all sizes for in-store pickup, and all locations carry the required trash and compost bins. Bins ordered for home delivery are also being completed, with outstanding orders targeted for fulfillment by late March.

Since their rollout in July 2024, New Yorkers have ordered roughly 1 million NYC Bins, and DSNY officials say the bins are already making an impact: reports of rat sightings to the city’s 311 service have decreased for 15 consecutive months compared to the same months in the prior year.

The city’s containerization push is intended to phase out the use of loose black garbage bags, which are susceptible to wildlife disruption and contribute to street mess and pest problems. Requiring standardized, lidded bins that are compatible with mechanized sanitation trucks aims to streamline collection and cut down on environmental and public health issues linked to curbside refuse.

With the June deadline approaching, DSNY is encouraging residents and small property owners to acquire their bins as soon as possible — whether by visiting a Home Depot or arranging delivery — to ensure compliance and avoid enforcement actions once the rule goes into full effect.
