DSA Candidate Dalourny Nemorin to Challenge Ritchie Torres
The Democratic Socialists of America seek to take another Congressional seat in the Bronx after capturing the Mayor’s Office in the most recent election.
Socialist Dalourny Nemorin announced her campaign Thursday to unseat Congressman Ritchie Torres in the Bronx’s 15th Congressional District.
Nemorin is running under the banner of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), the leftist group behind Zohran Mamdani’s successful campaign for mayor. In the past several years, DSA has grown into a political powerhouse, capable of galvanizing huge voter turnout for its candidates. The group’s success is due to its ability mobilize an army of volunteers to reach voters through door knocking and phone banking drives, as well as a sophisticated social media and fundraising capability.
In a campaign video released Thursday, Nemorin’s campaign highlighted many of the challenges facing residents in the 15th Congressional District, such as immigration, housing and poor health care.
“For Generations, we in the Bronx have been an afterthought, forced to take care of ourselves,” she said in the video. “Many of us have lost trust in our politicians, our government and even this county. And it’s completely understandable.”
Nemorin’s platform advocates for universal rent control, stronger investment in public housing, higher taxes on the wealthy, a Green New Deal and Medicare for All. These positions are longtime priorities for the DSA, as well as other prominent socialists, like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio Cortez.
Nemorin is a graduate of CUNY Law School and currently works as a public defender at the Legal Aid Society. She is also a member of Bronx Community Board 1, where she is chairwoman of the Legislation and Policies Committee. The daughter of Haitian immigrants, she grew up in Miami and moved to New York City before law school.
Nemorin will challenge Torres in the Democratic Primary, scheduled for June 24, 2026. Torres has drawn the ire of leftists due to his support for Israel and campaign funds he has received from real estate interests. He also drew criticism for voting in favor of the Laken Riley Act, which requires U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to detain undocumented immigrants accused of committing nonviolent crimes.
“We need an elected official who will focus on us,” Nemorin said in the campaign video that focused on the lack of affordable housing and access to health care in Torres’ district. “The Bronx isn’t broken, we are just being ignored.”
The June primary ballot will include Ritchie Torres, Dalourny Nemorin and former Assemblyman Michael Blake, as well as LaRouche Movement candidate Jose Vega. Andre Easton, a member of the Party For Socialism and Liberation (PSL), plans to run in the General Election as an independent.
