Despite a federal court order that the Trump administration continue to issue SNAP benefits, many households have not escaped uncertainty caused by the government shutdown. Governor Kathy Hochul announced payments to families would resume after a federal judge ordered the program pay benefits in full. However, the Trump administration has already appealed the ruling — leaving many families who rely on the program nervous about how they will afford food in the near future.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps, is a federal program that helps low-income families buy food. The program is administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and eligibility is based on income, household size, and other factors. The program helps 1.8 million New York City residents purchase food. In the Bronx, close to 40 percent of rely on SNAP. The highest percentage of any borough.
